Torsion bars

Suspension components in 4x4 vehicles and pickups function like longitudinal springs, providing support and shock absorption through the torsion of the metal axle itself. A torsion bar is attached at one end to the chassis and at the other to a suspension arm; as the suspension compresses, the bar twists, storing energy that is then released to maintain the vehicles height and stability.
